The Andrews Family
We are Dick & Garnet Andrews, along with our daughters Lauren, Emily, and Allison. This chapter in our lives began several years ago in a typical family conversation at the dinner table. We, like so many others, found ourselves recovering from a sever downturn in the real estate market. My wife Garnet and I were looking to rent or make use of some commercial rental space and challenged our children to be involved with any ideas for its use. We were open to the idea of a family business.
The idea that stuck was a dog daycare. Having dogs of our own, we often encountered difficulty in dog care whenever we went away on vacation. We soon discovered many of our friends had the same problem. So, with an idea, a large building, a love for animals, and a lot of faith, we set out on an adventure.
Many names were considered but one came to the top of the list: The Red Fern Pet Lodge. This name is inspired by the novel Where the Red Fern Grows written by Wilson Rawls. This is a story of a young boy raised in the depression era who wants nothing more than to have his own dogs. He works hard and saves for two years to raise $50 to buy his dogs.
The story goes on to describe the trials and tribulations of the young boy as he raises and trains his dogs. The story ends when one of the beloved dogs dies in a battle with a great coon and the other passes away from a broken heart. The next spring, a beautiful red fern had grown up between their graves and the story went on to say that wherever on grew, that spot was sacred. Where the Red Fern Grows is a story of a family's faith in God and perseverance during difficult times and we feel it presents many similarities to our life story, as well as great inspiration for creating The Red Fern Pet Lodge.
