There’s a common misconception that the best way to tire out a high-energy dog is simply to let them run with as many other dogs as possible.

Meet Maverick, a four-year-old Yellow Labrador Retriever who’s been part of the Red Fern family since he was just a puppy.

From day one, Maverick has had an endless supply of enthusiasm. Whether he was sprinting across the yard, chasing toys, or convincing every dog around him to play, his energy never seemed to run out. His excitement was contagious, but in a traditional daycare setting, it wasn’t always easy to find another dog who wanted to keep up with him all day long.

High-energy and working breeds—including Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, German Shorthaired Pointers, Heelers, Vizslas, and many sporting and herding dogs—were originally bred to work alongside people.

• Exploring scent-based activities

• Playing with a carefully selected group of dogs whose personalities and play styles complement his own

Rather than spending the day trying to convince every dog to wrestle with him, Maverick has smaller groups, more individualized attention, and activities that keep both his body and his brain busy.
