Enrichment Daycare for Shy or Nervous Dogs
From Timid to Thriving: Frida’s Enrichment Daycare Journey
Every dog has a different personality.
Some race through the door eager to make new friends. Others need a little more time, patience, and encouragement before they feel comfortable in a new environment.
That’s exactly why we created Enrichment Daycare.
For dogs who are shy or nervous, our program provides a calmer, more personalized experience that helps build confidence at their own pace. One of our favorite success stories is Frida, a beautiful 1½-year-old Great Dane whose transformation has been nothing short of incredible.
A Gentle Start
When Frida first joined Red Fern, she was understandably cautious.
Like many shy dogs, she preferred observing from a distance rather than jumping into new experiences. New people, unfamiliar dogs, and busy environments could feel overwhelming, so our team focused on earning her trust first.
Our Enrichment Daycare is specifically designed for dogs like Frida: Shy or nervous dogs who prefer human interaction over making new canine friends.
Instead of asking her to adapt to a large playgroup, we met her where she was—with one-on-one interactions, confidence-building activities, gentle introductions, and plenty of positive reinforcement. There was never any pressure—just patience.
Confidence Built One Day at a Time
Today, Frida attends Enrichment Daycare two to three times each week, and the difference is remarkable. The once timid Great Dane now can hardly contain her excitement when she arrives. Her tail starts wagging before she even gets through the front door, and she greets our team with the kind of joyful smile every dog parent loves to see.
Her confidence wasn’t built overnight. It came from hundreds of positive experiences, trusted relationships, and a routine that helped her realize the world wasn’t nearly as scary as it once seemed.
The Best Kind of Progress Happens at Home
One of the greatest compliments we can receive is hearing that the growth we see at Red Fern carries over into everyday life.
Frida’s mom recently shared this with us:
“Frida has really blossomed socially in her time at Red Fern. When she first arrived she was very timid and introverted. Now she cannot get inside fast enough when we arrive, her tail wagging and a big grin on her face.
As someone that has never boarded a pet before, this means a great deal to me. All the efforts and energies that the entire staff have put into her growth is so appreciated.
My husband and I both see changes in her at home from all her experiences and exposure as well. She is less reactive to strangers and other dogs on her daily walk. We trust leaving Frida with you not only for Enrichment Daycare but for boarding also.”
Stories like Frida’s are exactly why we’re so passionate about individualized enrichment.
Why Enrichment Works for Shy Dogs
Our Enrichment Daycare helps shy and nervous dogs by:
- Creating positive experiences in a low-pressure environment.
- Building strong, trusting relationships with our team.
- Introducing new people, dogs, and activities gradually.
- Encouraging curiosity through games, puzzles, and exploration.
- Celebrating small victories that lead to lasting confidence.
For many dogs, these experiences don’t just improve daycare—they improve everyday life.
Every Dog Deserves to Feel Confident
Watching Frida grow from a timid newcomer into a happy, confident dog has been one of the greatest privileges for our team. Her story is a reminder that some dogs don’t need to be “fixed”—they simply need an environment that understands them.
At Red Fern Pet Lodge, our Enrichment Daycare is built around each dog’s individual personality, helping them gain confidence at their own pace while feeling safe, supported, and celebrated every step of the way.
Just ask Frida. She’ll probably be the first one through the front door.
